Job Description

A skilled Back‑End Software Engineer with solid experience building cloud‑hosted services using Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot.

As a key member of Old Mutual’s engineering team, the incumbent will contribute to designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend microservices, ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability across cloud‑native platforms. The role involves hands‑on development, participating in architectural discussions, collaborating in cross‑functional teams, and supporting DevOps practices within the delivery pipeline.

Job Description

Back-End Development (Java/Kotlin)

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs using Java or Kotlin and Spring Boot.
• Implement clean, maintainable, and testable code following best engineering practices.

Cloud Hosting (AWS)

• Build and deploy microservices to AWS, leveraging services such as EC2, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, S3, RDS/DynamoDB, CloudWatch, and IAM.
• Ensure applications are secure, scalable, and optimized for cloud‑native environments.

DevOps & CI/CD (Azure DevOps)

• Work with Azure DevOps (ADO) to manage repositories, pipelines, and release processes.
• Contribute to automated build, test, and deployment workflows.

System Architecture & Design

• Participate in solution design discussions, supporting architectural decisions to ensure high‑quality, scalable services.
• Collaborate with senior engineers on systems design, integrations, and improvements.

Database Development

• Develop efficient database schemas and queries using SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL) or NoSQL datastores.
• Optimize data performance and ensure consistency across distributed systems.

API & Integration Development

• Build and integrate APIs with internal and third‑party systems.
• Ensure integrations follow security, reliability, and performance standards.

Testing & Quality

• Write unit, integration, and component tests (JUnit, Mockito, etc.).
• Support debugging activities, performance tuning, and code reviews.

Collaboration & Delivery

• Work within cross‑functional agile teams, contributing to sprint ceremonies and delivery commitments.
• Collaborate closely with product, QA, DevOps, and front‑end teams.
• Provide guidance to junior developers when needed and participate in knowledge‑sharing activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3–5 years of experience in backend development using Java or Kotlin.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot, including modules such as Spring Data, Spring Web, and Spring Security.
• Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Solid understanding of relational or NoSQL databases.
• Hands-on experience deploying applications to AWS cloud environments.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and repository management (preferably Azure DevOps).
• Good understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to code quality.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability and willingness to stay current with new tools, patterns, and technologies.
